Browser security

The convenience of a web application like EK management software is that you can access to your data from any browser on any computer.

Modern browser are fast and efficient with plenty of functionalities to enhance your browsing experience. Among those are "plugins". Plugins are add-on piece of software you can download and install on your browser like reader modes, print tools or even games. Most browser developer companies like Google Chrome of Mozilla Firefox have their web stores where you can find and install those plugins in one single click. Plugins are created by third parties and almost anybody can create simple plugins.

However, you have to be very careful when installing plugins as it has security implications and most specifically when you are accessing sensitive data like emails or business data over an internet connection.

Earlier this year, a security company, Duo Security, has discovered serious security issues with chrome plugins that led to  the removal of 500 malicious extensions from the Chrome Web Store over ad fraud by Google.

Those malicious plugin may simply make redirects to advertising page for commercial revenue, but in many case the spying process could go far beyond by stealing private and sensitive data about your business, phone numbers, competition spying, ransomware, etc.

Our recommendations to mitigate security risk when using web application for business are:

  • Use privacy oriented web browser like Firefox, Brave;

  • Use a dedicated browser for your business data and another one for general, personal surfing and leisure;

  • Do not install unknown plugin on your dedicated business browser; Stick to secure plugins and extensions;

On one end, the web has made remote work and data exchange much more convenient, but in the other end it attracts a lot of ill-disposed people who just want to steal and exploit your data. Whether you are a small or a big company does not make a difference. Hackers will target less protected small companies or individual accounts to gain access to bigger ones to which they are connected to.
